Benazir Bhutto was the first woman elected Prime Minister of a Muslim country. Bhutto made headlines around the world when she won the 1988 elections in Pakistan. She also proved to be a strong and resilient figure in a nation wracked by bloody military coups. She died after being shot multiple times in the neck and chest by a suicide bomber who subsequently detonated a bomb, killing at least 38 others. At the time, the politician was campaigning for the January 2008 elections. Two months earlier, shortly after her return from exile, she had survived a similar attack that killed at least 136 people.
