According to tradition, the Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego, who was an Aztec convert to Christianity, on December 9 and 12, 1531. Her first appearance was on the hill of Tepeyac. The bishop demanded proof of the sign from Juan. Mary appeared a second time to Juan Diego and ordered him to gather roses. In a second audience with the bishop, Juan Diego opened his cloak, dropped dozens of roses on the ground and revealed an image of Mary inside the cloak. The image is now venerated in the Basilica of Guadalupe.
